.

I

I

MIA. Study included field observation of numerous similar facilities at other cities. Evaluation was based
upon selection of the building systems based upon longevity, cost effectiveness, ease in maintenance, local
availability of material, warranties and life span to cost ratio.

I

P&A performed services as a prime consultant for the design and construction phase of these two cargo
buildings. Included in the scope of work was coordination with DCAD, HNTB and sub-consultants,
structural design, engineering services duri+
ng bidding and construction phase. The construction phase program of this project was unique. In order for
the small contractor to be able to bid, this large project was split into small pieces. A total of 69 bid
packages were prepared and publicly advertised. Sub-contractors to the General Contractor were selected
through the public bidding process.

I

I

In addition to the building, a chiller plant was also constructed to provide air conditioning for three cargo
buildings. Two ramps and three bridges were constructed to provide vehicular access. The roofs of these
buildings are being utilized as rooftop car parking.

I

I

Miami International Airport Access Roadway System
Designed and provided construction administration of the 5-story parking garage, roadway
improvements, vehicular traffic flow entry study improvements to collector streets.

I

Tlte investigation of MIA Parking Garage No.7.
Cracks in the beams and columns were observed during construction. P & A perfonned a complete
structural analysis and review to verifY the adequacy of the original design. Investigation of in-place
construction was performed to determine the cause of cracks in the post tensioned beams. Specific tasks
included the investigation of the following structural components of the parking garage.

I

I

1- Post tensioned beams and girders with cracks, displaced and ungrouted tendon ducts. Investigation required
crack survey and monitoring, impulse radar survey, x-rays, structural analysis and repair recommendations.
Also included is review of the original design, structural analysis and review of the proposed repairs.
2- Evaluation of the cracks in column and post tensioned beam core joints, field survey of the cracks,
petrographic examination of the concrete, structural analysis and repair recommendations.
3- Review of the cracks in the gap structure beams, structural analysis, recommendation of repairs, design of
repairs and field monitoring.
4- Investigation, analysis and repair recommendations for ripples in the parking deck slabs, vibrations in the
parking deck, cracks in the elevator lobby slabs, cracks in the retaining wall, cracks in the railwalls and
evaluation of the columns with reduced concrete compressive strength.
5- Cost estimate and life cycle cost evaluation for various components of the existing structure, repairs and
comparison of various alternates.

I

I

MIAMI DADE TRANSIT

I

Soutlt Miami Parking Garage Expansion and Site Improvements:
The design of all on-site and off-site improvements including a 590 parking spaces
with the option of adding a five story parking garage or a three story office
building, a new interconnect fire water main servicing the local public areas
adjacent to the South Miami Metro Rail Station. The project included on-site
drainage system which can handle runoff from a 10 story building on a restricted
site without temporarily flooding or affecting public transportation facilities.

I

The site was complex as numerous utilities were located adjacent to the site, which
were not fully documented. The contract documents called for careful exploration
during excavation so as not to disrupt vital utilities to surrounding business operations. Traffic
maintenance and control were critical as the work involved impact to Sunset Drive, a major arterial.

I

I

I

Provisions had to be made to include drainage capability for an existing adjacent site which had previously
been utilizing the project site for its storm water runoff. Since the whole site is subject to heavy pedestrian
volumes, drainage was very critical as any minor ponding would result in a great inconvenience to users of
the Metro Rail Station facility.

I

Page 2

I

~ PIS TORINO & ALAM CONSULTING ENGINEERS, INC.
