An alarm system, e.g., telephone system, siren, two-way radio, etc. will be established in <br />such a way that employees on the site and the local fire department can be alerted in <br />case of an emergency. <br /> <br />23. The alarm code and reporting instructions will be conspicuously posted and the alarm <br />system will be serviceable at the job site during the demolition. <br /> <br />24. Fire cutoffs will be retained in the buildings undergoing alterations or demolition until <br />operations necessitate their removal. <br /> <br />8. STAIRS. PASSAGEWAYS. LADDERS AND CHUTES <br /> <br />1. Only those stairways, passageways, and ladders, designated as means of access to the <br />structure of a building, will be used. Other access ways will be entirely closed at all <br />times. <br /> <br />2. All stairs, passageways, ladders and incidental equipment thereto, which are covered by <br />this section, will be periodically inspected and maintained in a clean safe condition. <br /> <br />.... 3. In a multistory building, when a stairwell is being used, it will be properly illuminated by <br />; either natural or artificial means, and completely and substantially covered over at a <br />point not less than two floors below the floor on which work is being performed, and <br />access to the floor where the work is in progress will be through a properly lighted, <br />protected, and separate passageway. <br /> <br />4. No material will be dropped to any point lying outside the exterior walls of the structure <br />unless the area is effectively protected. <br /> <br />5. All materials chutes or sections thereof, at an angle of more than 450 from the horizontal, <br />will be entirely enclosed, except for openings equipped with closures at or about floor <br />level for the insertion of materials. <br /> <br />6. The openings will not exceed 48 inches in height measured along the wall of the chute. <br /> <br />7. At all stories below the top floor, such openings will be kept closed when not in use. <br /> <br />8. A substantial gate will be installed in each chute at or near the discharge end. A competent <br />employee will be assigned to control the operation of the gate, and the backing and <br />loading of trucks. <br /> <br />9. When operations are not in progress, the area surrounding the discharge end of a chute will <br />be securely closed off. <br /> <br />C~ 10. A substantial guardrail will protect any chute opening, into which workmen dump debris, <br />approximately 42 inches above the floor or other surface on which the men stand to <br />dump the material. <br /> <br />9 <br />
