Summary Minutes: Regular City Commission Meeting December 15, 2016 City of Sunny Isles Beach, Florida
10N. A Resolution of the City Commission of the City of Sunny Isles Beach, Florida, Declaring
Dana Goldman as Vice Mayor; Providing for an Effective Date.
Action: City Clerk Hines read the title, and Mayor Scholl reported typically we rotate the
Vice Mayor seat. In the past, the prior Mayor believed in seating it with one person and
Mayor Scholl said he is kind of on a two-year cycle. Commissioner Aelion was the Vice
Mayor for a couple of years, then Commissioner Gatto was the Vice Mayor for two years,
and tonight he would like to nominate Commissioner Goldman to be the next Vice Mayor for
two years. Commissioner Goldman has been a great Commissioner, she just ran for
reelection and she persevered. She will need to trade seats with Vice Mayor Gatto for the
next meeting.
Vice Mayor Gatto thanked Mayor Scholl for the honor of being Vice Mayor for the past two
years, she appreciated it and it was very rewarding. She said,to Commissioner Goldman that
as she knows she gets to fill in for the Mayor, and that means when his plane is late, you get
to speak in front of a bunch of people in an auditorium at the very last minute, it was a great
honor and a lot of fun. She can't think of a better person to follow up, and she thinks the
community agrees because they reelected her overwhelmingly this go around. Mayor Scholl
said in the old days when the Mayors were much older in age, Mayor Edelcup actually came
into office because Mayor Samson died, and Commissioner Goodman was five (5) days from
being declared the Vice Mayor, and so every time you sit down and talk politics, former
Commissioner Goodman reminds him that he was five (5) days away from being Mayor, and
so we take this designation very seriously.
Commissioner Aelion said he wanted to echo Vice Mayor Gatto's comments as we have
been serving here for a few years together and he can only say great words and great
comradery and congratulated Commissioner Goldman. Commissioner Goldman said what a
privilege and an honor to serve with such wonderful leadership and Commission, and City
staff. It has been a great privilege and honor of her career and her life, and so thank you all.
Public Speakers: None
Vice Mayor Gatto moved and Commissioner Aelion seconded a motion to approve the
resolution. Resolution No. 2016-2649 was adopted by a voice vote of 5-0 in favor.
100. A Resolution of the City Commission of the City of Sunny Isles Beach, Florida, Approving a
Payment to Florida Power and Light (FPL), in an Amount Not to Exceed $477,072.00
for the Collins Avenue Overhead Undergrounding Conversion Project from 17275 to
17555 Collins Avenue, Attached Hereto as Exhibit "A"; Authorizing the City Manager to
Do All Things Necessary to Effectuate this Resolution; Providing for an Effective Date.
Action: [City Clerk's Note: Documents distributed prior to the meeting.] City Clerk Hines
read the title, and Planning and Zoning Director Claudia Hasbun reported that this is actually
to advance a section of the undergrounding project basically from the Sole on the Beach to
the Chateau Beach Residences Projects. Those two developers are putting up part of the
money that is being spent here, and this section will come before the rest of the project. City
Manager Russo said this includes obviously some sections in between that are the City's
responsibility, so the two developers that you may recall put up about $330,000 of it.
