<br />Summary Minutes: Regular City Commission Meeting <br /> <br />June 17,2004 <br /> <br />City of Sunny Isles Beach, Rorida <br /> <br />Action: City Clerk Hines read the title, and Mayor Edelcup reported. <br /> <br />Public Speakers: Phillip Chernoff; Mary Ann Eicke <br /> <br />Phillip Chernoff said for the record that he did not resign, that he was removed, and that <br />he recei ved a call from Vice Mayor Goodman and was told that he has been removed <br />from the Committee. Mayor Edelcup said that the City's procedures as such that if he <br />did not resign, he cannot be removed unless the Commission were to act in total. Mr. <br />Chernoff said that under the circumstances he wouldn't want to serve on this Committee, <br />and that he will resign. Vice Mayor Goodman said he did call him and it was done <br />verbally. Mayor Edelcup said we will defer this until we receive a written resignation <br />from Mr. Chernoff. <br /> <br />Commissioner Iglesias noted that Herb Abramson did not accept the appointment and <br />therefore he appointed Alina Sosa-Perez to the Health and Welfare Committee, which <br />was just a correction. <br /> <br />Commissioner Thaler noted that the resignation of Trina Duluc was verbal. Deputy City <br />Attorney Ottinot said for the record we should have a written resignation. Mayor <br />Edelcup noted that the appointments by Vice Mayor Goodman and Commissioner Thaler <br />will be deferred until written resignations have been received by the City Clerk. <br /> <br />Commissioner Brezin moved and Commissioner Iglesias seconded a motion to approve <br />the appointment of Alina Sosa-Perez to the Health and Welfare Committee. The <br />motion was approved by a voice vote of 5-0 in favor. <br /> <br />11. DISCUSSION ITEMS <br /> <br />11A. Discussion regarding Jet Ski Wave Runners. <br />Action: City Manager Russo reported that two complaints were received concerning the <br />operation of jet skis, one was a letter from the Sands Point Association, and the issue was <br />generally the pollution, the gas power, the smell that comes out of the jet skis going in <br />and out, traveling too close to shore, and just getting from the shore, if they are going out <br />to the location that they are allowed to use them. He said that looking into this, the beach <br />is operated by the County, the permitting for jet skis on our beach which is typically the <br />hotels, one is the Newport, and the other is the Sonesta Hotel, there may be another, but <br />those are the two that he knows of. He said that the County has laws on this, there is a <br />channel that they have to mark off to go from the location, what he thinks is a 300-foot <br />mark which is the swim line, and they can go beyond that line. City Manager Russo <br />noted that the two fundamental issues are the pollution that these jet skis give off being <br />gas-powered, getting out to that point because, whether they are in the channel or not, it <br />is the same water that is going to where people are swimming, and then staying beyond <br />that 300-foot area.
