PART 3 EXECUTION <br /> <br />3.01 MORTAR <br /> <br />A. ASTM C270, Type S, with compressive strength of 1800 p. s. i. at twenty-eight <br />(28) days, except that Type M with 2500 p. s. i. shall be used for reinforced <br />masonry, when required by code and where indicated in the Drawings. <br />1. Ingredients: <br /> <br />a. Portland cement, sand, hydrated lime and water, or masonry cement, <br />sand, and water, with waterproofing added in accordance with the <br />manufacturer’s recommendations in mortar for exterior work. <br /> <br />B. Mix mortar with minimum amount of water for satisfactory workability, and only <br />in quantity needed for immediate use. <br /> <br />1. The mason may adjust the consistency. <br /> <br />2. Do not use mortar after the cement has begun its initial set. <br /> <br />3. Retempering will not be permitted. <br /> <br />C. Pointing and Cleaning: On completion, point up exposed masonry, including <br />joints at concrete columns and beams. <br /> <br />1. Fill holes and joints, remove loose mortar, cut out defective joints, and <br />repoint only where necessary. <br /> <br />2. Masonry surfaces which are to be exposed, either painted or unpainted, <br />shall be thoroughly cleaned free of mortar and stains and the joints pointed <br />to obtain a level, smooth surface. <br /> <br />3.02 ERECTION <br /> <br />A. Protect masonry work from damage, both in appearance and structural stability. <br /> <br />1. When rain is imminent and the work discontinued, cover the top of exposed <br />masonry with a strong waterproof membrane, well secured in place. <br /> <br />2. Replace walls damaged during construction by wind action or failure to <br />provide adequate protection and bracing, at no expense to the OWNER. <br /> <br />B. Lay masonry in a common running bond, with vertical joints centered over <br />masonry units below. <br /> <br />C.
