•
bV plN l' J(E
or sun
PUBLIC ART PROGRAM
Introduction & Overview:
The City Commission of Sunny Isles Beach has developed a Cultural Master Plan for
the benefit of its residents. The Cultural Master Plan (CMP) envisions that installation of
public art can help to refine the City's identity, creating a stronger sense of place and
community. The geography and population make up of Sunny Isles Beach presents a
challenge to development of a sense of true community within the City. Unique public
art is one of many ways to create a dialogue and a sense of pride among citizens.
Sunny Isles Beach has always been forward thinking with regard to the arts. Through its
Art in Public Places ordinance, first enacted in 2003, the City required developers to
either expend 1°/0 of estimated construction costs, not to exceed $500,000 on public art
in conjunction with their own development or at their option to pay the same into a
Public Art Fund. In addition, over the years, the City has purchased public art for its
parks but on a more random basis. Now, with the CMP, the City has developed a more
formal vision for.arts and culture within the City. Part of its implementation is the
following Public Art Program.
The Commission hopes this Public Art Program will connect meaningfully with the
public, bridging any divides both literally in terms of streets as well as in terms of
heritage in our extremely culturally diverse community. It believes new public art,
selected with this purpose in mind, will be leveraged to create accessible, community
focal points and gathering places. At its best, public art can be visually beautiful,
transformational and compelling, thereby enhancing the City's public ecosystem and
contributing to the quality of life for all.
Purpose:
This Public Art Program is one aspect of the implementation of the CMP. It is created
with the intention and purpose as follows:
1. Leveraging the arts to create a sense of place and increase quality of life.
2. Enriching individual citizen experience in public spaces and engaging citizens in
the public art experience.
3. Enhancing the appearance of public spaces.
4. Celebrating and giving visual expression to the City's cultural diversity.
EXHIBIT "A"
