City of Sunny Isles Beach Approach and Methodology
RFQ 18-02-01
Page 4

Cummins | Cederberg
7550 Red Road, Suite 217 ▪ Miami, Florida 33143
Phone: +1 305 741 6155 ▪ Fax: +1 305 974 1969
info@CumminsCederberg.com ▪ www.CumminsCederberg.com
in the planning of infrastructure, and
recently assisted Miami-Dade County on
this matter along with storm surge
flooding relative to upgrades at the North
District Wastewater Treatment Plant.
Similar services were provided for the
County’s waterfront park at Matheson
Hammock, where we developed sea level
rise flood mitigation concepts directly
applicable to the County with a detailed
implementation schedule. In addition, the principals of Cummins Cederberg were involved in several of the
County beach management projects and are intimately familiar with the conditions along the oceanfront.

Coastal and Marine Design
Design of marine structures can be very different from
upland structures due to the extreme environment and
exposure to dynamic and powerful coastal processes, as
well as constraints imposed by the environmental agencies.
Therefore, the design is generally advanced in phases to
ensure both engineering and regulatory requirements are
satisfied in the most efficient manner. Cummins Cederberg
prepared the seawall design for the Miami-Dade
Blvd./Collins Canal bike path project in Miami Beach. This
project was complicated not only by certain environmental
requirements but also by several critical utility lines, which
limited the proximity of pile driving activity and required
creative design solutions.

For beach projects it is important to establish a long term
strategy due to the dynamic nature of beaches and
potentially extensive permitting involved. Beach projects
are often of significant cost but can erode quickly if not
designed probably. Continuing placement of sand in eroded
areas without a strategy, can in the long term be costly, if
the underlying erosion problems are not addressed.
Cummins Cederberg has been involved in various beach
management projects in Miami-Dade County for 15 years.
Most recently, Cummins Cederberg designed a small truck
haul project for the County, but has also been involved in large scale nourishment projects such as Hillsboro
Beach, Hollywood Beach and Hallandale Beach.
