Phase II services included securing a reliable sand source for enhanced recreational use and improved storm protection bordering the park facilities north of Phase I. The borrow area for beach fill was designed to re-align the flow of Hurricane Pass to reduce persistent erosion and shoaling challenges throughout the inlet and realign the navigation channel away from the highly used recreational beach. This project is a cooperative effort of the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and Pinellas County, through Humiston & Moore Engineers. As part of the design for the second phase, the Park Service realigned the parking lot to allow for a landward retreat and conversion of approximately an acre of parking surface to be converted as part of the beach and dune system. This second phase consisted of 3 T-groins and approximately 163,000 cubic yards of sand fill from an expanded borrow area used for Phase I. Weekly meetings benefited the construction progress. The project has received state funding and is being monitored. The project performed very well in protection upland infrastructure during the 2016 and 2017 hurricane seasons and has established a sustainable beach in an area experiencing chronic erosion since 1982.H&M remains involved at the park consulting on coastal design and permitting issues related to upland improvements. H&M has also provided design and permitting for seawall replacement at the Caladesi Island State Park marina. That project has been permitted and is being completed in phases which began in April 2017.
Reference - Florida DEP Parks & Pinellas County
Contact: Marshall Flake (850) 245-3170marshall.flake@dep.state.fl.us
Dates: 2004- Present
Proposed Team Member's Experience
Humiston & Moore Engineers, PABrett Moore, PE Mohamed Dabees, PhD, PE Steve FogeMarc Damon, PE
Project Highlights:• Hydrographic Mapping • Alternatives Analysis • Design & Permitting • Beach Nourishment• Erosion Control Analysis
226
