Detailed reports provided daily of any and all activities(crisis/non-crisis). As a detention officer I was required to display excellent negotiating skills, self-control during situations of crisis, good judgement and resourcefulness within the guidelines of the institution. I was responsible for inmate logs and records, rosters and housing assignments,the daily detailed record of any damages to property as well as written and verbal reports of all detainee behaviors on a daily basis. I was charged with overseeing inmates in various designated areas, monitoring for unusual behaviors, rule infractions, and suspicious activities. I regularly conducted facility searches for contraband, hazardous items and any other determined prohibited items in order to maintain security levels within the institution. I was additionally responsible for searching, monitoring and controlling the movements of visitors as well as detainees who were entering the facility, patrolling parameters, observing inmate recreational/educational activities, and continuously enforcing rules of the institution. Because safety must be upheld at all times, I was required to respond to all emergency situations defusing them as quickly as possible which included the capability of defending myself, protecting and assisting fellow officers, inmates and support staff when necessary. When necessary I restrained inmates by force with the use of handcuffs and other approved restraints. As a senior detention officer I provided on the job training of newly assigned officers and assisted with the development of updated security measures within the facility. I also served as the union representative (council 10)at the detention facility for five years representing the best interests of my fellow officers (negotiating grievances and appeals).
