Underground Cable Replacement
Marietta, GA

In 2010, Lockheed Martin Corporation consulted with P&D regarding its old Paper Insulated Lead Cable
(PILC) system in Marietta, Georgia, and determined that it needed to be replaced. Many of the cables
dated back to the 1950’s, and because they were encased in lead, not only did they pose an
environmental/health hazard, there were very few people available who were qualified to repair them.
Repair had become a significant issue since the cables had begun to fail frequently due to age.

Working with the Lockheed facilities staff, P&D developed a program to replace the cables in this 12 kV
system across seven project phases over the next several years (2011 to 2016). This project required
extensive coordination to keep the system operational while replacing approximately 30 miles of cable
with more than 50-unit substation loads (12 kV to 480 V). Since nearly all unit substations have two
different feeders serving them, switching could be performed during low activity hours to minimize
impact on plant production.

P&D provided detailed design for this project that included researching and updating systems maps,
many of which had not been updated in 20 years. To do this update, we performed a manhole survey to
determine exactly which conduits were used by what circuits. We were then able to detail the exact
conduit-cable routing and replacement and provide a comprehensive map of this complex cable system
to the client. P&D has remained a trusted advisor to Lockheed for more than 30 years; we continue to
be the first call Lockheed makes whenever special problems occur within its power distribution systems.

Underground Distribution
Brewton, AL

For Southern Pine EC, P&D designed 0.75 miles of underground distribution circuit to supply service to
Wind Creek Casino located Atmore, AL. We prepared a labor and material contract with comprehensive
construction specifications for the triple circuit 600A system. The conductor used 500 MCM cable. We
performed field investigations and developed detailed plan drawings. We prepared a labor and material
contract with comprehensive construction specifications. P&D solicited bids for the contract, answered
contractor questions during bidding, conducted the bid opening, and evaluated the proposals received
for conformance to the technical requirements of the contract. P&D also oversaw installation of a new
automated switchgear to serve the new load.

Subdivision Underground Distribution
Multiple Locations, FL

This group of projects in 6 counties throughout the Florida panhandle consisted of design for
underground distribution circuits and street lighting in 20 subdivisions. Project sites ranged from 25 to
2500 lots per subdivision. Once the construction contractor laid out the general arrangement of each
subdivision, blueprints were turned over to P&D. These blueprints were scaled drawings that showed
streets, lot lines, routing of water and sewer lines, etc. P&D designed the backbone of power grid for
each subdivision and added it to the blueprints. Futura software was used to complete the design.

Once excavation and curbing were completed, P&D went onsite to field stake duct bank route selections
and location of proposed equipment. Equipment included junction boxes, handholes, terminations
