PROJECT APPROACH AND UNDERSTANDING
The City of Sunny Isles Beach is known for the residents and visitors that comprise the community,
residents who enjoy water sports, comfortable and safe homes, as well as it being an exciting and beautiful
community. Part of the safe neighborhood is reliable power service. However, overhead utility lines are
neither beautiful nor reliable. With high property values and therefore high property taxes, the residents
and taxpayers expect and deserve a high level of service for their infrastructure system. The existing
system was installed decades ago and may have been state-of-the-art in the middle of the last century.
However, it is showing its age. Power outages are far too common due to the age and condition of the
power facilities. There are many areas where overhead utility poles with multiple wires mar the otherwise
beautiful streetscape. And as we know from the hurricanes of 2004-2005, the overhead lines are subject to
weather impacts.

Florida Power & Light (FPL) is implementing a hardening program to better withstand extreme weather
events. Their solution is to replace current wood poles with larger concrete poles. This solution will make
the current view even more unsightly. Therefore, the City would be wise in taking advantage of this
opportunity to both harden the utilities and improve the view and service. FPL will offer a 25% reduction in
their costs if a large (3 miles or more) project is undertaken. This will allow the City to implement this
program at a substantial reduction in cost.

It is impressive that the City is undertaking this project to improve the appearance of Sunny Isles Beach
while also improving the services that the residents enjoy. We would very much like to help the City
achieve these goals and we plan to do so while also keeping the City beautiful during the process.
