BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT AND RELEVANCE TO THIS CONTRACT (Include scope, size, and cost) <br />Hardesty & Hanover performed bridge engineering design services for The Inner Harbor Pedestrian Bridge, located in Copenhagen's <br />Nyhavn section. Services included design of span operating and span support machinery and control systems as well as movable <br />bridge coordination with bridge structural design. H&H’s design included forward <br />support roller and rear support bogies, transverse guidance rollers, and an operating <br />rope drive system. <br /> <br />UK-based Studio Bednarski, with bridge engineers Flint & Neill and H&H and lighting <br />designers Spiers and Major, won an international competition and developed the <br />preliminary and final bridge design for Københavns Kommune (Copenhagen City <br />Council) as part of the Inner Harbor development. <br /> <br />The signature S-curve shaped bridge has two movable leafs retracting between fixed <br />approach box girders. The bridge is visually striking with a strong architectural <br />presence for the span structure as well as the control house located adjacent to the structure. Functioning on a sliding mechanism with <br />an opening that spans 50m and has a total length of 180m, the bridge deck is 7m wide and has a low structural profile which enhances <br />views along and across the harbor. <br /> <br />Another significant feature of the bridge is the inclusion of viewing platforms at the edge of the navigation channel. Platforms provide a <br />safe position for pedestrians and cyclists to view the bridge movement and allow close proximity to the passing ships and boats. The <br />bridge's slightly sinuous alignment extends the bridge and maximizes the length of the adjoining ramps. This geometry permitted the <br />ramp grades to be limited to 4%. This grade balances the needs of the pedestrians and cyclists with the desire to limit the intrusion of <br />the ramps onto the harbor sides. The bridge superstructure consists of the two main cantilevered moving sections that have smooth <br />soffits reminiscent of a boat hull. The approach ramps consist of clean box girder elements that provide an efficient structure that is <br />elegant yet low maintenance. <br /> <br />The team has received many awards for <br />the project, including having the bridge <br />named one of the “world’s most <br />impressive feats of structural engineering.” <br />25.
