Wonderland Pedestrian Bridge
Boston, Massachusetts

Client
Massachusetts Bay Transportation
Authority (MBTA)
John Waugh
781.793.9988

Start / Completion Date
2012

Highlights
• Design for Pedestrian Bridge
(with two elevators) as part of
the Tender Package for a
Design-Build project.
• Cable-Stayed Design, Double T
Beams (NEXT Beams
Prestressed Concrete Design).
• Coordination with MBTA
(construction of active Rail and
connection with Subway
Station).
• Pedestrian Bridge / Plaza to
Accommodate Future
Development (proposed hotels
and garages).

Hardesty & Hanover performed engineering services for the MBTA Revere rail
facility and streetscape project at the Wonderland Station. The design was
completed as part of the tender phase for a design-build contract and consisted
of preparation of contract documents for a new pedestrian bridge to provide
pedestrian access over a heavily
traveled roadway to a multi-use
facility that links the MBTA
subway station to the nearby
beach waterfront.

The design involved a new cable
stayed bridge, prestressed
concrete approach structure, two
elevators (to the beachfront and
subway station), landscape
architecture and aesthetic
treatments to create a “gateway”
to the historic beachfront.

The project involved coordination
with MBTA’s Boston Commuter
Rail and MassDOT for direct
connections to the MBTA subway
station, construction over active
rail lines, as well as coordination
to accommodate future
development proposed at this site
(garage and hotels located two
levels below the long ramp).

Construction over two MBTA Rail Tracks
Construction to Coordinate with Future Development
F-18
