BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT AND RELEVANCE TO THIS CONTRACT (Include scope, size, and cost)
The $35 million Campus Building 6 renovation project is located on the Eduardo J. Padron
Campus (formerly the InterAmerican Campus) in Miami, Florida. The College required
expansion to the campus due to unprecedented growth. Renovations consisted of a
complete remodel of atrium, ground and mezzanine for conversion to student spaces,
upgrading existing infrastructure, enhancing building facade, new elevator tower, complete
finish renovation, and converting floors 5 - 7 to classroom and student areas.
Terracon furnished geotechnical engineering, materials engineering, testing and
inspection services for the renovation project as part of the aforementioned continuing
contract. Terracon served as the geotechnical engineer of record for the elevator shaft construction at the Building 6 in
2015. The new elevators were constructed after demolition of the existing structure. The elevator foundation was installed
approximately 8 feet below the existing grade. The foundation was designed using an allowable bearing pressure of 5000 psf;
the existing structure was supported on a shallow foundation system bearing at the same elevation of the proposed elevator
foundation and was also designed using an allowable bearing pressure of 5000 psf.
Geotechnical exploration services were conducted to provide information and geotechnical engineering recommendations
relative to subsurface soil conditions, foundation design and construction, earthwork, and groundwater conditions. Soil borings
were performed to depth of 30 feet below the existing ground surface. The soil samples were collected, classified in the field,
then transported to our laboratory for additional testing and classification. Terracon also performed construction materials
testing, laboratory testing, and special inspection services for the site work and building improvements, including elevator
shaft construction, at Building 6 from 2015 to 2017. Terracon's scope of work included earthwork observation and testing,
concrete testing and observation, concrete cylinder and beam testing, field density testing, Windsor probe testing, grout
compressive strength testing, concrete compressive strength testing, and fireproofing testing.
The College requested a background noise assessment to evaluate exterior traffic noise levels on first and second floor
classrooms facing the roadway in 2018. The background noise assessment Terracon performed included the following.
Monitoring was conducted using Type 1 integrating/data logging sound level meters (SLM) equipped with octave band
analyzers.
Monitoring was conducted in two locations (first and second floor classrooms) for approximately 60 minutes in each
location. A and C -weighted average and octave band sound levels were measured. Monitoring was also conducted
outside of the building.
The first -floor classrooms were tested in the morning and during the afternoon "rush hour" traffic conditions. The second -
floor classrooms were only tested during afternoon hours (between classes). Terracon provided recommendations to
the College to assist in lowering the interior classroom noise.
Firm's Fee: $99,529 estimated
(1) FIRM NAME
a.
