Page 33Request for Qualifications # 22-06-01 Continuing Services for Landscape Architectural Services CCNA
4.1 Firm Qualifications and Experience
Use of Silva Cells: Miller Legg has utilized silva cells in our
designs for projects which involve sidewalk/pedestrian
improvements where space is limited and trees are
mature. These cells are a modular suspended pavement
system that use soil to create forest-like conditions in
the city, supporting large tree growth and providing
powerful on-site stormwater management through
absorption, evapotranspiration, and interception.
CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental
Design): The basis of CPTED is that proper design and
effective use of the built environment can reduce
crime. All our park project designs utilize the principles
and practices of CPTED to provide a safe recreational
amenity for Park users and adjacent landowners.
Through natural surveillance, access control, territorial
reinforcement, and maintenance and management, the
resulting environment will discourage or impede criminal
behavior. The implementation of these principles, when
considered early in the design process, does not increase
costs and ultimately supports a safer community.
Habitat Assessment / Restoration: With our in-house
biological, environmental and engineering staff and a
range of over 5,000 acres of habitat restoration projects,
Miller Legg has an unsurpassed expertise with natural
areas that are successfully integrated with passive
recreational uses, resulting in award-winning projects.
Some of these include City of Plantation Plantation
Preserve, Pembroke Pines Preserve, and Broward
County West Lake Park. This experience can provide
environmental amenities along the existing lake that can
not only enhance the recreational experience but also
improve water quality and add educational opportunities.
Sustainable Best Management Practices: Our landscape
designs strive to incorporate sustainability to minimize
the consuming effect on the environment. We integrate
systems and materials that are cyclical in design and use
and have a benign or positive effect on the environment,
such as the use of native plants, xeriscaping, green building
materials, among others. An emphasis on sustainable
design, in combination with long-lasting products that
positively affect the economic viability of a project, are
not just good for the environment; they provide cost
savings in the long run though reduced energy and water
usage costs. Our firm has worked on numerous projects
which incorporate advancing technology and concepts,
ranging from pervious pavement, incorporation of
bioswales and other filtration systems to create a
treatment train concept that allows for stormwater to
be stored, reused for irrigation or hydration of natural
systems and natural filtration, with as much as possible
recharge and reduction of discharge. Our landscape
architects augment nature by designing landscape
enhancements that blend with the environment. We
work to identify the most effective and durable designs
and to assess repair methods for existing structures.
Evaluating both initial and periodic costs of different
repair strategies can guide our Client in obtaining better
overall value for its current maintenance dollars. Work
done at an earlier stage will not only cost less, but will
reduce the rate of deterioration, creating savings now
and in the future. Miller Legg has designed dozens of
active and passive park projects in South Florida, both
urban and rural locations, which consider and include
resiliency design elements. Major elements considered
are plant selection as well as material selection.
Our design Team focuses on the sustainability of
parks projects. This begins with integrating any
existing environmental resources and/or identifying
environmental opportunities within proximity of a
park. Integration of any native habitat, xeriscaping
or existing desirable plant material into the design
