The proper selection of plant material also
provides for resiliency, allowing the project to endure
rising sea levels, increased hurricane, and tropical
storms, as well as adapt to increased salt air. In selecting
resilient plants, we recommend native species because
they are low maintenance, require less water, less
fertilizer, are adapted to the local environment, and are
capable of withstanding major storms and hurricanes.
Understanding planting conditions is critical in selecting
the right material for wet conditions, dry conditions,
or plant material that can handle both. Our landscape
architects and designers follow grades and standards as
well as ASNI and ISA Guidelines to ensure plant material
being installed is of the highest quality.
Material selection is a similar process. Miller Legg
landscape architects and designers recommend using
certain types of metals such as aluminum close to coastal
areas to resist rust, using pervious/porous concrete
to allow natural drainage to continue through the soil,
and using polymer/wood blends to meet aesthetic
requirements with maintenance/longevity requirements.
We work to identify the most effective and durable
designs, evaluating the initial cost of enhancements such
as concrete quality, admixtures and corrosion protection,
balanced against future maintenance expenses.
These principles have been implemented in such
diverse design projects as: Doral Glades Park, Biscayne
Everglades Greenway Trail, Broward County Long Key
Habitat Restoration, Miramar Pineland Nature Center
Design/Build, Tradewinds Park Equestrian Trails, Miami
Baywalk Phase 3, Coral Springs Red Lichen Sanctuary, FIU
Bird Basin Land Management, Miami Dade Expressway
Authority Design/Build Central Boulevard and FIU
International Center for Tropical Botany.
Permitting Excellence: Miller Legg has permitted a
significant number of similar projects throughout the state
and are very familiar with infrastructure improvements
and environmental regulations that will apply to this
project. Our experience serves to streamline the design
and permitting process and allow for a fluid transition
from design to construction, while avoiding delays in the
overall project schedule. We actively follow the agency
reviews and prompt these bodies for comments and
issuance of the permits. Upon issuance, we implement
our tracking summary sheet that is used to view the
permit status and expiration dates for the project. We
streamline the design and permitting process and allow
for a fluid transition from design to construction, while
avoiding delays in the overall project schedule. We have
an impeccable record of no violations of federal, state,
or local law or regulations.
Communication: Through our many projects we
have learned not to be passive. We have found it is
important to engage the local utilities companies, local
municipalities, and have great communication. This
will ensure each project has minimal conflicts during
design and construction. Again, in addition to great
communication, our landscape analysis and opportunity
plans ensure the final landscape and Irrigation design is
functional, aesthetic, and low maintenance. We have
also learned to look for innovative ideas that will help
simplify, beautify, and increase the longevity of the
landscape on FDOT projects.
Cost Estimating and Control: Our substantive prior
experience working with a variety of municipalities
including Sunny Isles Beach, has enabled us to develop
quality, sustainable designs within budgetary constraints.
We can provide the City with unmatched planning and
design efforts required for any project that might be
assigned under this Contract. Our Principal-in-Charge,
Michael Kroll, RLA, FASLA, ensures that our Team has the
resources available to complete the City’s projects on
time and within your established construction budgets.
Miller Legg fully appreciates the budget challenges
posed by the COVID 19 economic downturn. The
financial impact on improvement programs will result
in curtailment or possible cancellation of some planned
projects. Our firm is no stranger to this new environment,
having successfully consulted with many municipalities
during previous difficult economic periods. Miller Legg
d.
