<br /> <br /> <br />City of Sunny Isles Beach <br />NE 174th Street Roadway Improvements <br />329200 - 5 Sodding <br /> <br /> <br />3.02 PREPARATION: <br /> <br />A. Excavation, Backfilling, and Fine Grading: Areas where sod is to be planted shall have the top <br />three inches of material removed and replaced by a two inch blanket of planting soil prior to <br />sodding. Remove stones, sticks, rubbish, and other extraneous matter. All rough areas and voids <br />shall be eliminated during final grading in order to have a smooth and even grade. <br /> <br />B. Fertilizer Application: <br /> <br />1. The rate or application for dry fertilizer shall be 16 pounds per 1000 sq. ft. if 6-6-6 is used <br />and 12 pounds per 1000 sq. ft. if 8-8-8 is used. Fertilizer shall be spread uniformly over areas <br />to be sodded, by use of a distribution device calibrated to distribute the specified quantities. <br />2. Disc-spread the fertilizer into the soil to a depth of three inches. <br /> <br />3.03 INSTALLATION: <br /> <br />A. Placement of sod: The sod shall be moist, and shall be placed on a moist bed of planting soil. <br />Pitchforks shall not be used in handling sod, and dumping from vehicles shall not be permitted. <br />The sod shall be carefully placed by hand, edge to edge in rows at right angles to the slope, <br />commencing at the base of the area to be sodded and working upward. The sod shall be <br />immediately pressed firmly into contact with a 500 pound hand roller, or any other equipment <br />approved by the Architect that will produce a 90 pound per square inch compression grading. <br />The rolling operation shall provide a true and even surface and insure knitting without <br />displacement of sod or deformation of the surfaces of the sodded area. Hand tamp those areas <br />inaccessible to the roller. The edges of the sodded area shall be staggered in a corresponding <br />manner, providing the offset along the edge does not exceed 6 inches. All vertical edging adjacent <br />to sodded areas shall be tamped so as to produce a featheredge. <br /> <br />B. On slopes having a ratio of one in three or greater, peg the installed sod into place with not less <br />than two stakes per square yard. <br /> <br />C. Immediately after completing placement of sod, begin watering operation. Water shall be applied <br />in the amount necessary to keep the sod moistened to the full depth of the root zone for a period <br />of not less than two weeks. <br /> <br />D. After the initial two week watering period, apply water as needed, to maintain rooting and growth <br />for the duration of the Contract until beneficial occupancy. <br /> <br />E. Clean-up: After the sodding operations have been completed, all debris, fertilizer bags, pallets <br />and other construction debris created by the subcontractor shall be removed from the project. <br />Any paved areas, including curbs and sidewalks which have been strewn with soil, sod waste, or <br />fertilizer shall be thoroughly swept. <br /> <br />F. Weeding: In the event that weeds or other undesirable vegetation become prevalent to such an <br />extent that whether cut or uncut they threaten to smother the grass species, they shall be removed <br />as directed by the Landscape Architect. If necessary, replace as needed. <br /> <br />G. Sanding: If, in the opinion of the Architect the sod bed, after planting, is in need of an <br />application of sandy top-dressing, for reasons of irregularities or shrinking joints, the <br />subcontractor shall immediately perform this function.
