They must be resistant
enough to keep people from falling.

There are different types depending on what they will be used for:
➢ Wood railings: wood components shall be at least 1500 lb-ft/in2 fiber (stress grade)
construction grade lumber; the posts shall be minimum 2 -in by 4-in lumber spaced not more
than 8 feet apart on centers; the top rail shall be at least 2-in by 4-in lumber, the
intermediate rail shall be at least 1-in by 6 in lumber.
➢ Pipe railings: posts, top railings and intermediate railings shall be at least one-half inches
diameter with posts spaced not more than 8 feet apart on centers
➢ Structural steel railings: posts, top rails, and intermediate rails shall be at least 2-in by 2in by
3/8 in angles with posts spaced not more than 8 feet apart on centers.

Lids
➢ Small openings on structural work or other constructions must be covered with wood or
metal lids equipped with shims on the underside to prevent them from moving.

Work platforms
➢ Must be at least 18 inches wide and those located more than 10 ft above a lower level must
be equipped with guardrails between 38 and 45 inches high, midrails and toe boards. Skid-
proof surfaces.

Ladders
➢ Commercially available wood or metal ladders with upper support points exceeding 3 ft high
and anti-skid ground plates, anchored at the top and positioned at an angle of 1:4.

➢ The assembly of prefabricated ladders on site is prohibited.

Tubular metal scaffolding
➢ These structures are assembled and disassembled by specialized personnel following the
manufacturer’s recommendations and issuing a stability certificate.

➢ Before they can be assembled, the sections of scaffolding which will house the working
platforms must be perfectly level horizontally.
➢ Any scaffolding that is less than five metres wide must be anchored to stationary points on
the structure or the facade.

➢ All work platforms on scaffolding must have stationary flooring at least 18 inches wide, with
38 to 45 inches high safety rails running along the outside of the scaffolding, provided that
the scaffolding is located more than 10 ft above the lower level.
