GEI Consultants | City of Sunny Isles Beach | RFQ 26-07-01 58 <br />Arverne Nature Preserve Design and Dune Restoration <br />Far Rockaway, New York | NV5 (formerly RBA Group) <br />GEI designed a 35-acre nature preserve in the Rockaways on the southern tip <br />of Queens, New York. <br />The Far Rockaway community was devastated in 2012 during Hurricane Sandy and has been <br />slowly rebuilding and incorporating improved coastal resiliency measures. GEI was retained <br />by The RBA Group (now NV5) to provide specialized ecological restoration and landscape <br />architectural services related to endangered and threatened species protection, dune <br />restoration, and boardwalk reconstruction design for New York City Economic Development <br />Corporation and New York City Department of Parks and Recreation (NYCDPR). <br />The Arverne Central Park Preserve was designed to provide educational outreach for the public <br />with its Nature Center and 1.5-mile Loop Trail. The park also maintains an important wildlife <br />corridor, enhances native maritime communities (including rare Maritime Grassland), and <br />supplements the protective natural buff er for nesting shorebirds such as the endangered piping <br />plover and least terns. <br />GEI assisted with development of the concept design and agency approval process through <br />NYC Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD), NYCDPR, and the NYC Arts <br />Commission. GEI prepared the landscape restoration drawings and technical specifications, with <br />special consideration for protection of critical nesting habitats for endangered and threatened <br />birds, rare plants, and on-site sensitive areas within the coastal erosion hazard zone. The project <br />included an intensive invasive species management program designed to restore the natural <br />diversity of five distinct maritime communities. <br />GEI also provided construction support services to the design team through the review of sand <br />submittals and shop drawing reviews while project construction was underway.
