GEI Consultants | City of Sunny Isles Beach | RFQ 26-07-01 62 <br />Flood Mitigation Seawall Design at Lawrence High School <br />Cedarhurst, New York | Mark Design Studios Architecture, P.C. <br />The Lawrence High School campus was severely flooded when neighboring <br />Mott’s Creek overflowed during Superstorm Sandy; flood levels reached eight <br />feet in many locations, causing extensive damage throughout the school. <br />To prevent the recurrence of a similar future event, the school district secured FEMA funding <br />to transform the campus into a community management center during future storm <br />events, to upgrade the entire facility to prevent overtopping and improve flood resiliency, <br />and to design and install a new campus-wide protective seawall. GEI is providing design, <br />permitting, and construction phase services for the construction of a perimeter flood wall <br />around the entire campus, inclusive of passive flood gates, strategic drainage, and emergency <br />generators and pumps. <br />Although constructing a perimeter seawall would help prevent overtopping during a 500-year <br />storm event, additional measures were required to discharge accumulated rain and water <br />percolated from sub-grade sandy soil throughout the site. GEI performed a groundwater <br />hydrology and hydraulic study to evaluate site flooding due to a combination of groundwater <br />discharge, rainfall, and tidal action. Pumps were needed to lift internally accumulated water <br />over the seawall to minimize flooding on the campus. The location of the seawall had to be <br />coordinated with the proposed relocation of existing campus features and infrastructure to <br />minimize impacts on existing shoreline resources. <br />During GEI’s site walk-throughs, we observed the presence of a low and high salt marsh <br />community along the shoreline, which added complexity to the regulatory review and approval <br />process.
