Served as the Project <br />Engineer for the FDEP CCCL permitting for various mixed-use coastal development <br />in the City of Sunny Isles Beach, including The Estates at Acqualina, Varadero <br />and Armani Casa. Responsibilities for these projects included performing coastal <br />engineering analyses required to support the CCCL permit application, including <br />evaluation of the site specific eroded beach profile, determination of design wave <br />crest elevations, and assessment of wave loads on the proposed structures in <br />accordance with applicable FDEP regulations and coastal engineering standards. <br />Thunderbird Marina, Sunny Isles Beach, FL. Served as the Project Engineer for <br />the design of the proposed Thunderbird Marina in Dumfoundling Bay. This project <br />consists of a marina for powerboats and sailboats and includes fixed docks for 36 <br />slips, one floating kayak dock and power, water and pumpout utilities. Manuel led <br />the development of the meteorological and oceanic (metocean) conditions to be <br />used for design purposes, developed the marina layout, and evaluated potential <br />impacts to water circulation (flushing) as part of the FDEP permitting review process. <br />Westshore Marina District Living Shoreline and Shoreline Armoring, Tampa, FL. <br />Served as the Coastal Engineer responsible for planning, analysis, and design of <br />waterfront components for a mixed-use development, including a small craft marina, <br />dredging, and replacement of approximately 1,700 linear feet of deteriorated <br />seawall with resilient shoreline stabilization. Performed hydrodynamic and wave <br />modeling to establish design criteria and evaluate shoreline protection alternatives <br />that reduced erosion, dissipated wave energy, and enhanced ecological value. <br />Supported the broader civil engineering and site development team by informing <br />site layout, grading, roadway and utility design, stormwater management, and <br />protection of upland infrastructure from coastal hazards. The project also achieved <br />a successful FEMA CLOMR, removing most upland areas from the SFHA, reducing <br />flood risk, and improving development potential. <br />Boca Chica Restoration Engineering with Nature, NAS Key West, FL. Served <br />as the Coastal Engineer leading the coastal resilience assessment, evaluation, <br />and development of shoreline protection alternatives for Geiger Beach at Naval <br />Air Station (NAS) Key West. The project focused on enhancing the resilience of <br />critical military infrastructure by reducing the vulnerability of the southeastern end <br />of Runway 32 and adjacent airfield facilities to erosion, wave attack, storm surge, <br />and future coastal hazards. Applying Engineering with Nature (EWN) principles, <br />evaluated nature-based and hybrid shoreline stabilization strategies that provide <br />long-term protection while preserving and enhancing natural coastal processes and <br />ecological function. <br />Manuel Castaño PE, WEDG <br />Project Manager | Moffatt & Nichol <br />Manuel leads a variety of coastal engineering and waterfront development <br />projects focusing on the master planning and design of coastal infrastructure, <br />including shoreline enhancements, boating infrastructure and coastal protection <br />structures. Manuel has experice in all phases of the project (from concept <br />development to construction administration) and has lead numerical modeling of <br />coastal conditions, mooring analyses, navigation assessments and FEMA coastal <br />flood studies for various projects. In addition, Manuel is one of the co-authors of <br />PIANCS WG 168 (Single Point Yacht Moorings), and is currently involved in ASCE’s <br />Sea Level Change Task Committee.
