<br />This project required the demolition and construction of a six -lane bascule bridge over the environmentally
<br />sensitive Miami River. A significant component of the Miami Riverfront revitalization, the project was built
<br />in six phases during 930 days. In order to maintain traffic on the existing bridge, the first half (northbound)
<br />was constructed downstream of the existing bridge. Once this was complete and operational, traffic was
<br />switched to the new structure and the existing structure was demolished, allowing room for the second half
<br />of the bridge (southbound).
<br />Structures Manager, 5th St. Bascule Bridge, FDOT District 6, Miami, FL, $60 Million
<br />Luke served as Structures Manager on this 300 LF, four -lane bascule bridge replacement over the Miami
<br />River. The $60 million project was completed in four traffic control phases and included minor bridge
<br />demolition, the construction of a new steel bascule bridge with control tower, 30" pre- stressed concrete
<br />foundation piling, 24" reinforced concrete abutment piling, two cofferdams, two concrete bascule piers, a
<br />fender system, roadway and approaches, lighting and signalization.
<br />Superintendent, 63rd Avenue Bascule Bridge, FDOT, District 6, Miami, FL, $15 Million.
<br />Luke was responsible for monitoring and tracking quantities; managing operational costs, scheduling and
<br />coordinating subcontractors; and assisting with the management of field operations related to drainage
<br />activities. The project included the complete replacement of the steel portion of an existing bascule bridge,
<br />removing an existing flyover bridge and the complete reconstruction of 1 mile of A1A. The structural scope
<br />consisted of the total replacement of four bascule leaves and installation of new machinery.
<br />Structural Steel Superintendent, SW 2nd Ave Bascule Bridge, FDOT District 6, Miami, FL, $43.5
<br />million.
<br />Luke served as Structural Steel Superintendent for this $43.5 million bascule bridge project. Scope of work
<br />consisted of a new single span, double leaf Bascule Bridge. The bridge at 303 ft clear distance from trunnion
<br />to trunnion and a nominal width of 72 ft is one of the longest, widest and heaviest bascule leafs in the
<br />world. Construction elements include, heel sections at 900 tons each, four trunnions 4 ft dia.,18 ft long at
<br />50 tons each, toe section at 100 tons each. Over 2300 tons of structural steel was fabricated with over 2400
<br />tons of steel in the counterweight. Main drive system consists of 4 hydraulic cylinders, open loop circuit
<br />design and centralized tandem power units. Concrete construction included tremie pours, foundations.
<br />Additional work included sheet pile cut off walls, pile driving, fenders and bulkhead construction.
<br />General Superintendent, Haulover Bridge Rehabilitation, FDOT District 6, Bal Harbor, FL.
<br />Luke served as General Superintendent for this FDOT project that involved the rehabilitation of an existing
<br />bridge over the ICWW. Scope items included removing sections of the concrete deck, finger joints at each
<br />end of the bridge, and after minor steel rehabilitation, replacing the concrete deck.
