BEAarchitects
John Colao, AIA, GCQA/QC
Bicentennial Maritime Park Master Plan, Port of Miami, Miami, FL. Master plan for a downtown
park including four cruise ship berths, an outdoor amphitheater, vita course, soccer fields, nature
walks, open spaces, retail shops and restaurants.
Maroone Nissan, Fort Lauderdale, FL. BEA was contracted to remodel approximately 5,000
SF of existing showroom and customer lounge space, as well as reclad façades and create a new
entrance feature. The $600,000 project, completed in early 2003, employs architectural pre-cast
concrete and smooth metal panels consistent with Nissan’s national standards.
Bill Seidle Dealerships, Miami and Davie, FL. Project manager for complete A/E services for two
dealerships: Suzuki in Davie, FL: 11,000 SF, $1.2 million new facility including site improvements.
Nissan in Miami, FL: 5,000 SF, second-floor addition, $2.75 million.
Parking Garage for Royal Caribbean International, Port of Miami, FL. Project architect for the
750-space, four-story garage, including an on-site FP&L energy plant. The project is conceived to
allow for a twin of the first parking structure.
Muvico Theaters, Boca Raton, FL. Project architect for this 515-car, two-story parking garage.
Maroone Nissan, Miami, FL. This $4 million, 40,000-SF compound consists of different facilities—a
two-story, 12,000-SF showroom and a 28,000-SF service center with a storage mezzanine—on two
sites separated by a street. Architecturally, the buildings share a modern vocabulary of pre-cast
concrete and smooth metal panels consistent with Nissan’s national standards. The service center
contains high-bay facilities and separate wash and paint bays. Located in the heart of Miami’s
Little Havana neighborhood, the dealership opened in spring 2003.
Sunshine Ford, Miami, FL. The Sunshine Ford dealership was remodeled to meet current Ford
Motor Corp. specifications. Renovation occurred without impacting operation of the facility. Floor
plans were remodeled; restrooms were upgraded to ADA compliance; and ceilings, flooring, wall
coverings, doors, hardware and fireproofing were renovated.
Miami Honda, Miami, FL. A 73,000-SF, two-story, high-bay facility for a new Honda dealership was
designed. A vehicle maintenance facility was an important component of this project’s successful
planning, design and management. Construction cost for the building was $3.7 million with $1.3
million for site work. The dealership is located on 9.2 acres of paved and landscaped commercial
property adjacent to the heavily trafficked Palmetto Expressway.
Passenger Cruise Terminal, Tampa Port Authority, Port of Tampa, FL. Master planning, MEP
engineering, structural engineering, construction documents and interior design services were pro-
vided for the 110,000-SF facility. Targeted to accommodate 3,000 passengers, the master plan for
the terminal allowed for site development revolving around market demand. Moreover, phasing was
coordinated with the U.S. Navy’s expected departure from an on-site training facility.
Passenger Cruise Terminals 6 & 7, Canaveral Port Authority, Cape Canaveral, FL. Mr. Colao
was responsible for the preliminary design and design development of Cruise Terminals 6 & 7 as
a “super megacruise terminal” able to handle up to 4,500 passengers. The facility accommodates
two 1,500- to 1,600-passenger ships simultaneously, or one vessel of over 3,500 passengers. The
design also integrates Cruise Terminal 5 directly adjacent to the site, an interface that will allow the
complex to handle the “World City Ship,” a vessel planned to accommodate over 6,000 passengers.
Passenger Cruise Terminals 3, 4 & 5, Port of Miami, FL. Mr. Colao provided preliminary design,
design development, construction documents and construction administration for this $76 million
renovation project to accommodate two Legend Class ships or two Eagle Class ships simultaneously.
Passenger Cruise Terminals 9 & 10, Canaveral Port Authority, Cape Canaveral, FL. Mr. Colao
managed the construction documents and construction administration for this two-story, 70,000-SF
multifunctional facility that can accommodate one 3,500-passenger megaship, or two, 1,600-passenger
standard class ships.
20 |
