SAMSON OCEANFRONT PARK <br />CITY OF SUNNY ISLES <br />TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS <br />MORTAR 040516-3 <br /> 2.03 GROUT: <br /> <br /> <br />A. Grout shall consist of mortar to which sufficient additional water is added to cause the material to flow. <br />Comply with the requirements of ASTM C476 and CAI 530.1. <br /> <br />B. Non-shrink grout used for grouting column base plates, and elsewhere as indicated, shall be pre-mixed <br />Embeco Grout as manufactured by Master Builders, or approved equal. <br /> <br />C. Grout compressive strength shall be 2500 psi at 28 days. <br /> <br />D. Block cells and cavities below grade shall all be filled with concrete or grout. <br /> <br />E. Utilize fine grout when grout space is smaller than 4" in either direction. <br /> <br />2.04 ADMIXTURES: <br /> <br /> <br />A. No antifreeze liquids, salts, or other substances shall be used in the mortar in an attempt to lower the <br /> freezing point. <br /> <br />B. Accelerators or other admixtures will be permitted only after consultation with the Architect as to method <br />and products to be used, and approval of the Architect is obtained <br /> <br />C. Calcium chloride or admixtures containing calcium chloride shall not be used. <br /> <br />D. Water repellent mortar admixture should only be used in mortar for joints in exterior brick or stone. <br /> <br />PART 3 - EXECUTION <br />3.01 <br /> <br />MORTAR TYPE: <br />A. Mortar for Masonry in contact with earth: Mortar shall be type "M" mixed in the proportions of 1 part <br />Portland Cement, 1/4 part hydrated lime or lime putty and between 2-1/4 and 3 parts sand, by volume. <br />At the option of the Contractor, mortar may be mixed in the proportions of 1 part Portland Cement, I <br />part masonry cement, Type 11, and between 4-1/2 and 6 parts of sand by volume. <br /> <br />B. Mortar for all unit masonry not specified otherwise: Mortar shall be Type "S", mixed in proportions of I <br />part Portland Cement, 1/4 to 1/2 parts hydrated lime or lime putty and 2-1/4 to 3 parts of sand by vol- ume. <br />At the option of the Contractor, mortar may be mixed in the proportions of 1/2 part Portland Cement, 1 <br />part Masonry Cement, Type II and 2-1/4 to 3 parts of sand by volume. <br /> <br />C. Masonry grout shall be used for setting all pre-cast items except lintels. D. The exact mix proportions to be <br />used shall be submitted for approval. <br /> <br />3.02 MIXING: <br /> <br /> <br />A. Follow recommendations of manufacturer and as herein indicated. <br /> <br />B. Mix all cementitious materials and sand in a mechanical batch mixer for a minimum of 5 minutes, <br />maximum of 10 minutes. Adjust the consistency of the mortar to the satisfaction of the mason, but add <br />only as much water as is compatible with convenience in using the mortar. If the mortar begins to <br />stiffen from evaporation or from absorption of a part of the mixing water, retemper the mortar <br />immediately by adding water, and remix the mortar. <br />
