Cold- Weather Construction:
1. Do not lay masonry units that are wet or frozen.
2. Remove masonry damaged by freezing conditions.
3. Perform the following construction procedures while masonry work is progressing within the
temperature ranges listed below:
a. Above 40°F: Normal masonry procedures. Cover walls with plastic or canvas at
end of workday
b. b 40°F -32°F: Heat mixing water to produce mortar temperatures between 40°F -
100°F until placed. Completely cover walls and materials to prevent wetting and
freezing with plastic or canvas for 24 hours after construction.
c. 32°F -25°F: Heat mixing water and sand to produce mortar between 40°F -100°F.
Maintain mortar above freezing until used in masonry. With wind velocities over
15 mph provide windbreaks during the workday. Completely cover walls and
materials to prevent wetting and freezing using auxiliary heat or insulated
blankets for 24 hours after construction.
d. 25°F -20°F: Heat mixing water and sand to produce mortar between 40°F -100°F
.Maintain mortar above freezing. Enclose work area and provide heat sources on
both sides of walls under construction. Completely cover walls and materials to
prevent wetting and freezing using auxiliary heat or insulated blankets for 48
hours after construction.
e. 20°F and Below: Heat mixing water and sand to produce mortar between 40°F -
100°F. Heat masonry units to 40°F minimum. Use heat sources on both sides of
walls under construction. Provide enclosure and heat to maintain temperatures
above 32°F within enclosure. Maintain temperatures above 32°F within the
enclosure for 48 hours after construction.

B. Hot-Weather Construction:
1. Perform the following construction procedures while masonry work is progressing within the
temperature ranges listed below:
a. 100°F -40°F: Normal masonry procedures. Cover walls with plastic or canvas at end of workday. b. Above 1oo°F or 90°F with 8 mph or greater wind velocity: Maintain mortar temperature between 70°F -100°F. Limit spread of mortar bed to 4 feet, and place units within one minute of spreading mortar. Fog spray and/or cover with canvas or plastic partially or newly completed walls to prevent moisture evaporation.
3.05

INSTALLATION:
A. General: Follow recommendations of Brick Industry Association, National Concrete Masonry Association,
and the Building Stone Institute for installation ofmortar as appropriate.

B.
