B.1 Introduction

Degrove’s project management methodologies consist of five process groups and a control system. The
process groups include:

1. Initiation
2. Planning
3. Execution
4. Monitoring and Controlling
5. Closing

1. Initiation
The initiation process determines the nature and scope of the project. The key project controls needed
are an understanding of project scope and making sure all necessary controls are incorporated into the
project. Issues to be resolved at this stage include the following:
Scope and deliverables
Objectives
Resources needed
Milestone plan and timeline
2. Planning
The planning process begins with the Project Manager appointing the specific project team and then
delegating specific duties to each team member based on their unique skills, specialized expertise, and
current workload. The Project Manager works with the project team to plan the execution stage. The
planning stage includes the research of pertinent information, as well as the determination of field
methods and the identification of potential project obstacles including things such as property access
and inhospitable terrain. This stage allows for appropriate steps to be taken preemptively to avoid
unexpected project setbacks (i.e. making sure all equipment is in good working order, contacting the
proper authorities to arrange for safe and legal access to the beach, etc.).
3. Execution
Execution consists of the processes used to complete the work defined in the project management plan,
to accomplish the project's objectives. The execution process involves coordinating people and
resources, as well as integrating and performing the activities of the project.
4. Monitoring and Controlling
The monitoring and controlling process group involves managing and tracking the project, so potential
problems can be identified quickly and corrective action can be taken. Monitoring and controlling
includes:
Measuring the ongoing project activities (where are we, against where we should be?)
Monitoring the project variables (cost, effort, scope) against the project management plan and
the project baseline (where should we be?)
Identifying corrective actions to address risks and issues (how can we get back on track?)
