,~. '; North Bay Road Pedestrian/Emergency Vehicle Bridge and Town Center Observation Deck & Boardwalk
','- ~. ",:
~ .
Although we acknowledge that the structures proposed herein are not the only viable options for this
crossing, it is our intent to present the City with both a low cost (economical) structure and a high-
end structure in order to provide a cost range in which to determine the best solution, budget and
schedule to meet the City's needs.

.

2.1.3. Maintenance of Bridge Structure

Maintenance is a major concern and should be a driving force in the selection of span atTangement.
The less spans the fewer joints, bearings, and common elements that need inspection, replacement,
and care.

.

. Annual cost for maintenance of the structure is assumed to be 0.05% of the initial cost of
the structure. This cost is for the annual upkeep of the structure i.e. minor repairs to the
structure elements, cleaning of gutters, downspouts, etc.

. Biennial inspection cost is assumed to be 0.15% of the initial cost of the structure. This
is similar to the requirements set forth in the National Bridge Inspection Standards - 23
CFR 650.3 for highway bridges.

. Cleaning and sealing of the concrete deck surface is required tive times during the 75-
year design life. It is assumed that the deck surface area will require cleaning and sealing
once every 25 years.

. Cleaning and sealing of the concrete substructure surfaces is required three times during
the 75-year design life. It is assumed that 100% of the substructure concrete surface area
will require cleaning and sealing once every 25 years.

. Bearings will require replacement three times, once every twenty tive years, during the
75-year design life.

. Expansion joints will require replacement at least three times, once every twenty tive
years. during the 75-year design life.

2.1.4. Aesthetics

Pedestrian bridges are good examples of human application on the landscape. A structure
designed without consideration of aesthetics can serve its function, but becomes a visual barrier. A
well-designed structure appeals to all.

The City of Sunny Isles choice of span arrangement alternative will result in varying levels of
visual impact on the surrounding environment that currently include residents, pedestrians, and
patrons. The Future may consist of restaurants, patrons of commercial and retail nature, as well as
operational uses of the facility such as life safety or emergency vehicles.

The objective should be to ensure that the pedestrian bridge complements the local vernacular and
benefits the local community. Visibility of the structure is an important factor. Pedestrian bridges
are aesthetically pleasing if they are simple in form and symmetrical.

.

Request for Qualifications No. 07-03-01
