The new bascule bridge <br />provides fifty-five feet of vertical clearance, reducing the number of openings to one every hour for <br />approximately five minutes. The twin structures are each fifty-four feet wide and are separated by a thirteen <br />foot wide open median. The bascule leaves span 210 feet between the centerlines of the trunnions. The <br />design of the bridge involved many significant innovative features. Perhaps the most significant innovation <br />was the development of the "carina" pier. This was the first use of a V-shaped pier on a bascule bridge and <br />provides less restricted views of the water and improves the overall proportions of the structure. <br /> <br />The bridge deck of the bascule leaves is an exodermic deck built with a composite steel grid system and a <br />concrete riding surface. This is only the second bridge in the country to use this system. The heavier weight <br />of the deck required a heavier counterweight. This was achieved by using a combination of heavyweight <br />concrete and steel ballast. For aesthetic reasons, the bascule leaves utilize steel box girders. This is the first <br />time that steel box girders have been used on a bascule bridge. The box girders and exodermic deck provide <br />lateral stability so the typical unsightly lateral bracing of the bascule leaves were eliminated. <br /> <br />The approach spans consist of trapezoidal precast segmental concrete boxes. The approach spans vary in <br />depth from eight feet at midspan to thirteen feet at the piers. This variation was incorporated to accentuate <br />the arched appearance of the approach spans.
