voluntary effort, or could have the benefit of grant funding as a health
initiative. It could be limited to school districts or worksites in close
proximity - or it could encompass an entire city or county.
A community -wide effort does not have to start off community -wide. For
example, in Clark County, Fit PickTm was initially implemented in all
buildings at two participating worksites (City of Vancouver and Clark
County) and one school district (Vancouver School District.) Building upon
this success, tactics for promoting the program county -wide were
developed. These included electronic and direct mail to potential
vending sites and to all area vending operators. Media outreach raised
the awareness of consumers and vending sites that had not been
reached via direct mail. The successful launch within the three pilot
organizations provided sources for media stories.
One possible approach to organizing a community -wide campaign
includes the following steps by the lead organization or agency:
• Survey worksite and school health and wellness coordinators
for interest in implementing a Fit PickTm Program.
• Ask interested organizations to identify their vending operators
and provide contact information.
• Invite all interested organizations, vending operators, and local
food distributors to the table for an upbeat discussion of Fit
PickTM.
• Engage organizations and operators in planning for
implementation and promotion using this Guide as an outline
for your efforts.
• Once implementation is successfully underway, alert the
media to the arrival of Fit PickTm in your community. Give credit
to the worksites, schools and vending operators who were
involved.
• Promote the program to consumers and other worksites and
schools via e -mail, traditional mail, word -of- mouth,
presentations and PSA's.
• Measure your success by tracking the number of vending sites
that convert to Fit PickTm in your community.
• Celebrate you efforts!
2
