• Tip 8: The Role of the Vending Route Driver: Most vending companies <br />employ drivers who service vending machines along a specific <br />geographic route. These drivers are charged with stocking their trucks, <br />re- stocking and maintaining machines, and collecting money. <br />Typically, drivers work for a minimum wage, augmented by <br />commission based on the sales from machines on their route. <br />Therefore, drivers are motivated to work quickly and stock products <br />that sell well at the highest margin. Sometimes, the machine is stocked <br />according to the driver's personal preferences. It is important to <br />develop a relationship with the route driver and monitor machines <br />closely for compliance with the Fit Pick TM criteria. If there is an initial <br />lag in sales, a driver who is paid commission may be less likely to follow <br />through with the program unless there is support from the vending site <br />and the vending operator. <br />• Tip 9: If the driver is paid a base salary without commission the <br />choice of product may not be tailored by the driver, but by the <br />vending operator. In such a case, it would be advisable to have <br />regular contact with your vendor's customer service representative or <br />route manager. <br />VT 0 <br />41r, 1 �.5 <br />Tip 10: What's on the truck will end up in your machines. Some Fit <br />PickTM items may not be regularly stocked on the vending truck. <br />Therefore, the driver may not have the appropriate type and <br />ariety of products available to fill your machines. If the Fit <br />PickTM spaces in a machine are left empty on a frequent <br />basis, ask the route driver to attend to this by making a <br />special effort to load the product on the truck. If not <br />addressed, this should be reported to your vending <br />operator as it will impact the overall success and <br />profitability of the Fit PickTM program at your site. <br />) 11: Route drivers usually follow a chart or "plan -o- gram" <br />Details the general classification of products to place in <br />VU11UU3 u1ea1 of the machine (i.e., chips, candy, cookies, gum, etc.) <br />The specific product choice within the classification is often left up to <br />the route driver. It may be possible to work with the vending operator <br />to specify particular Fit Pick products on the plan -o -gram (see <br />Appendix B for sample plan -o- gram.) <br />• Tip 12: Posting an approved list of Fit PickTM items inside the vending <br />machine may be helpful for both route drivers and customers. <br />How to Locate Your Vending Operators <br />In a community -wide effort, an important first step is to identify the <br />vending operators in your community. Ask your partner organizations to <br />help with this. Be aware that there may be more than one operator <br />serving an organization and that the company that provides beverage <br />service may differ from the snack vending operator. There are several <br />ways to determine which operator serves an organization. <br />9 <br />
