Atkins | Stone Mountain CID
Planning and Urban Design | 3-22
Atkins | City of Sunny Isles Beach, RFQ No. 12-04-020006.027944.0512
Ridgewood Lakes Master Planning, JL Land Development, Inc., Davenport, FL.
Ridgewood Lakes is an approximately 2,500 acre parcel of land located in Polk County, FL.
Atkins was retained to provide master planning services for the potential future development,
which included road alignment for Holly Hill Road extension through the site, layout of a
roadway circulation network, restoration alignment of Horse Creek, varying densities of
residential development areas, commercial development areas, a school and civic development
area, park and open space system, greenways and trail connectivity. As Project Landscape
Architect, Mr. Johnson was responsible for master planning design, and production of
presentation graphics.
Downtown Master Plan, Village of Grayslake, IL. Mr. Johnson served as lead landscape
architect in charge of prototypical design efforts, graphic communication, and presentation
renderings. In anticipation for the village’s centennial anniversary, a downtown master plan
was created to provide a sense of downtown cohesiveness. For sake of project management,
the downtown district was analyzed and categorized into a series of prototypical areas.
Design recommendations, planting schemes, and character sketches were completed for each
prototypical area.
Downtown Master Plan, Village of West Dundee, IL. As part of a downtown design
program, Mr. Johnson created rendered character sketches, and assisted in the design,
development, and construction documentation phase of the project.
“The 3R System, the Building Blocks of Recreation.” Atkins Project Enhancement
Initiative. The Planning and Landscape Architecture Group was awarded $10,000 as an
internal Atkins Project Enhancement Initiative. The purpose of these initiative was to encourage
the implementation of new technologies into conventional approaches to the providing of
professional services to all of its clients. The 3R System was developed by a group of its certifi ed
parks and recreational planners, land planners, landscape architects and GIS programmers
and technicians and is comprised of three modules, the fi rst module, called REVIEW, uses GIS
Arc Pad technology to collect information in the fi eld at each of the park sites. Information
is assessed both quantitatively and qualitatively for each of the recreational components
that compose a park. The second module is RESPOND, which uses the Internet to survey the
residents of the community to determine user preferences and needs. The survey participants
are then geo-referenced into the GIS database to identify which area of the community is
providing input. The last planning module is called REMAP. This module receives the information
from the REVIEW and RESPOND modules and places it into a database. This allows Arc View
to develop queries and graphic displays that identify the shortfalls of recreational facilities and
their location within the system. When complete, this information becomes the planning source
for the determination of levels of service and assists the city in allocation of tax dollars and
comprehensive plan updates.
Thomas Johnson, RLA,
LEED AP
Architecture and Urban
Design
