BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT AND RELEVANCE TO THIS CONTRACT (Include scope, size, and cost) <br /> <br />The South Siesta Key is located approximately 4 miles south of Sarasota Pass in Sarasota <br />County, Florida. The area has been experiencing high erosion eroding over the years mostly <br />due to a lack of sediment supply to the system because of a prominent rock outcrop formation <br />know as Point ’O Rocks and large scale nearshore changes to the south upon closure of <br />Midnight Pass. The beach was nourished in 2007 with approximately 1M CY of sand. <br /> <br />Humiston & Moore Engineers was selected by Sarasota County to design and permit Phase II of <br />the beach restoration project. The project included an offshore sand search, project design <br />updates, final plans, permitting, technical specifications and bid process support to the County, <br />and construction compliance overview, on site observation, and project certification. <br /> <br />The project construction started in March 2016 and was competed in late April 2016 and <br />included an innovative submerged nearshore berm to help reduce chronic erosion stress along <br />the south segment. The project also included dune planting and monitoring of nearshore and <br />offshore natural resources. Weekly progress meetings during construction with the county, <br />contractor, and engineer created a positive experience and successful project. In September <br />2016, Hurricane Hermine impacted South Siesta Key, causing accelerated <br />adjustments to the newly placed sand. H&M was hired by the county to <br />provide an analysis of the storm impacts to FEMA.
