US 1 Utility Undergrounding
Holly Hill, Florida

QLH, a Mead & Hunt Company is providing design, permitting and bidding assistance in addition to
construction contract administration and inspections on this 1.7-mile utility conversion project along US
1.

The first phase of this project included the design, permitting and construction of individual electrical
and communication services to each of the properties fronting US 1. The design also upgraded FPL
streetlighting to current Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) requirements and installed
additional underground conduit for the City’s future communication expansion.

The second phase requires individual building permits for the
properties. We are coordinating with various communication
providers to review the designs of their underground facilities.

After this step, our team collaborated to design a master set of
construction documents that incorporated the necessary conduits for
each provider’s facilities. Permitting included FDOT Utility permits,
building permits for the electrical service conversions, and St. Johns
River Water Management District and US Army Corps of Engineers
Environmental Resource Permitting for the LPGA Canal crossing.

Ridgewood Avenue (US 1)
South Daytona, Florida

For this project, Mead & Hunt installed approximately 94,000 linear feet of conduit to convert existing
aerial utilities along Ridgewood Avenue (US 1) between Beville Road and Big Tree Road. The design also
included installing approximately 4,300 linear feet of 10-, 6- and 4-inch reclaimed water mains and
various appurtenances for the conduit and reclaimed water main.

The utility conversion portion of this project consisted of converting
approximately 40 overhead utility services to new underground
facilities. Our design also installed a roadway median lighting system
for accent and up-lighting of the existing landscaping.

Streetscape improvements included widening the existing sidewalks
from five feet and adding decorative features. We also removed on-
street parking, added a bicycle lane, replaced curbing, improved ADA
accessibility, created a utility/green space behind the sidewalk for
landscaping purposes, improved traffic signals and resurfaced and
restriped the roadway.
